NERC Regulatory Research Intern
Seeking a detail-oriented and intellectually curious intern to support regulatory research within the NERC ecosystem. This part-time, unpaid (or nominally compensated) role is well-suited for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in energy policy, law, public policy, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity who want direct exposure to the regulatory framework governing the reliability and security of the North American bulk electric system.
Work will include tracking NERC Standards development activity (Standards Authorization Requests, balloting, and comment periods), monitoring FERC orders and Notice of Proposed Rulemaking activity relevant to CIP and reliability standards, reviewing Regional Entity compliance monitoring bulletins and audit guidance, and summarizing regulatory developments in structured, practitioner-usable formats. Research outputs will directly support client advisory work and may contribute to published content.
Ideal candidates are familiar with the structure of the NERC regulatory hierarchy (FERC, NERC, Regional Entities, Registered Entities) and have demonstrated ability to read and synthesize regulatory and legal documents. Familiarity with NERC CIP Standards, the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Program (CMEP), or energy regulatory proceedings is a meaningful differentiator (but not required). Strong written communication is essential. This role produces research that many others will rely on.
Mentorship from practitioners with direct NERC CIP auditing, utility compliance, and federal advisory experience is included. Candidates who perform well may be considered for paid engagements or future consultant roles as Ampyx Cyber grows.
